The Veterans of the Bank Presents
Halfway to Freedom Panelists

“Halfway to Freedom”

A Story of Promises Kept

An intimate evening and discussion at Amador

Sami, a former U.S. Army Linguist, survived by a Taliban bounty and made it to the United States safely. But when Kabul fell in August of 2021, his family was trapped—and targeted.

Join us for a profound panel discussion featuring Sami, his sister Maryam, and Marine Colonel (Ret.) Chris Starling, who helped orchestrate the family’s daring escape.

We will explore Sami’s own incredible history of service, Maryam and her family’s grueling 24-hour trek on foot through the Khyber Pass, the 2.5 years of uncertainty that followed, and the relentless mission that finally reunited them.

What to Expect

  • An intimate, firsthand account of the 2021 Afghan withdrawal from multiple perspectives.
  • A deep dive into the enduring bond between U.S. veterans and our Afghan allies.
  • An unforgettable evening of connection, storytelling, and Q&A.
